As part of the Mendip Studio School Sixth Form induction programme for Year 12, students were invited to spend a week with the National Citizen Service, an organisation that encourages young people to discover their hidden passions and challenge them to embrace new adventures, face their fears and give back to their local community.
Students travelled to Culmington Manor in Shropshire and took part in a range of adventurous activities including high ropes, low ropes, kayaking, caving and canoeing before returning to school to plan their Social Action projects which incorporate a 30 hour community focussed project.
The programme is recognised by top universities and employers across the country and is a boost to applications for higher education, apprenticeships or gap year experiences.
This year students will be working at St Nicholas’ Church, clearing the garden and performing maintenance tasks, taking part in a charity walk, Creating a communal Garden at Writhlington for students, organising a charity Fifa tournament and organising a whole school Fete, which will take place on October 15 from 12pm – 4pm.
Head of Writhlington Sixth Form Karis Higgins said:
“ I am so proud of all our Year 12s who took part in the NCS project. they have shown great commitment and resilience. The residential adventure in Shropshire was a great way to start the year, building skills and teamwork. Now our students are working very hard in their own time to complete their social action projects, which include creating a community garden in school and organising a school fete to raise money for the students chosen charities. “
