The Prince’s Trust with Hauser & Wirth

As part of the Prince’s Trust Achieve programme, our Year 10 students took part in creative workshops at the Hauser and Wirth Gallery in Somerset. This internationally renowned gallery and multi-purpose arts center concentrates mainly on contemporary art and offers a variety of special events and learning programmes centered around conservation, education, and sustainability.

Students learnt about the different jobs and processes required to run a large public access organisation. They met several Hauser & Wirth staff members including one of the Directors, the Head Gardener, Head Chef, Registrar, Head of Communications, and Head of Reception. Each student asked questions they had prepared before the visit. As a team, they supported each other, carefully recording the responses received and demonstrating great confidence.

Students had time to explore the sculptures in the grounds and learnt more about the contemporary art on display. The day culminated in an art workshop where they learnt the art of tie-dyeing spending time twisting, knotting and folding a t-shirt before applying liquid dye.

Well known Bristol artists Dorcas Casey, a mixed-media sculptor and printmaker, Victoria Willmott, joined the students on the second day. Under their expert tuition and guidance students created, cut and printed their design onto their t-shirts. The results were fantastic!

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Debbie Hillyerd and all of the staff at the Hauser & Wirth for hosting us for the duration of the project and also to Nina Mann at the Prince’s Trust supporting us throughout the visit.
