Jumping to new Heights

As part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Diamond Challenge, Writhlington and Mendip staff have pledged to take on new daring challenges that will push them to their limits and help raise money and awareness for the Duke of Edinburgh Charity, which supports young people in achieving their goals.

Twenty three brave members of staff took part in an abseil, including Executive Headteacher Mark Everett and Mendip Headteacher, Bruce Hain,  launching themselves from the tallest part of Writhlington school as gasps and cheers erupted from the students and staff who came to support.

Nicola Wilcox commented:

‘ This was a massive challenge for me, I struggle to stand more than ten steps high in our theatre without getting dizzy,  let alone hang off the side of a building! I was absolutely terrified but a few calming words from our Headteacher and hearing the encouraging cheers from the gathered crowds helped coax me over the edge. I have never been more proud of myself!’

Many staff have pledged to take part in other activities over the summer including swimming the length of the Channel, half marathons, walking and mountaineering challenges and learning new skills such as knitting and new languages.

Executive Headteacher Mark Everett commented:

‘ I am so proud of all our staff who have pledged to take part or who have supported this venture. Our next big Diamond challenge event will be Lord Lieutenant of Somerset Wheelchair Challenge in mid July. ’
