A Celebration of Women In Engineering

Students at Writhlington and Mendip Studio School celebrated National Women in Engineering Day at an event hosted by the University of Bath.

As the Government and industry is pushing for more young people to study engineering, charities and national societies have been raising the profile of successful female engineers defying an otherwise male dominated field in hopes of encouraging the next generation of female scientists and engineers.

Students were invited to take part in two different workshops aimed at encouraging and engaging young girls with different aspects of engineering. Split into two groups, students attended a Chemical engineering workshop where they built water filtration systems as well as a  Structural Engineering workshop  where students were challenged to build a tower from straws and sticky tape that would hold a beaker of water once complete.  Morwenna Young, Millie Misha and Cassie Sinanan took first prize in the Structural Engineering competition.

Science Technician Janet Godman Commented:

The morning at University of Bath was a really great insight into the world of Engineering, the whole event challenged students, testing their organisational and problem solving skills, with practical application.  Students left inspired and intrigued as to what possibilities the Engineering world might hold for them.’
