Mendip Studio School took part in the Rotary Club’s ‘Big Pitch’ competition which is aimed at promoting innovation and creativity in schools. The competition saw students at the school working with industry professionals and mentors from Rotary Club of Midsomer Norton and Radstock to compete for a chance to visit the Headquarters of global technology company, Dyson – an opportunity offered to very few.
The students travelled to Malmsbury in a stretch limousine, donated by Rotarian, Martin Spiller of Centurion Travel. Welcomed by The James Dyson Foundation – Dyson’s charity which exists to inspire the next generation of engineers – the students were treated to an intensive set of tutorials from engineers in Dyson’s Research, Design and Development department. Students spent time learning about the research and development process behind some of the company’s most iconic products before having lunch in the Dyson Boardroom. They were surrounded by the most current Dyson products which they could try out, they were intrigued and very excited to use the brand new Dyson SupersonicTM hairdryer only two days after its launch in Japan.
Students commented that they had found the trip “amazing” and were impressed by the building and the fact that the atmosphere seemed “relaxed and chilled”. They found the Dyson staff, that they met, so friendly and commented on how young the workforce seemed to be.

“It was an absolutely fascinating visit to the Dyson Headquarters and the students really immersed themselves in the world of engineering. The sessions led by Lead Engineers were truly inspiring and I think it gave the students a new insight into work for the future. The students were tremendous ambassadors for the school and a real pleasure to the spend the day with. Huge thanks to all who made it happen.”
