Year 10 B&NES Schools Football Champions!

This year’s final saw our Year 10 take to the pitch against St Gregory’s School on 2nd May.

Ben S scored a great goal from the wing putting us in the lead at the close of the first half.  St Gregory’s rallied in the second half – fast on the counter-attack, they struggled to break through our defense and Alex deserved to be capped Player of the Match for his rock solid defending. Following a run of good play, St Gregory’s managed to score the equaliser.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the pitch Ben R (attack Player of the Match) managed to cause St Gregory’s defense trouble. Despite holding the ball up it was not his day as he hit the crossbar during an attempt on goal.

Extra time saw the game at 1-1 so the players were forced to hold their nerve as they went head to head in a penalty shoot out.

Matthew continued to demonstrate his great ability saving the first two penalties played by St Gregory’s. Ben R was once again thwarted as he missed, such a different outcome to last year when he scored the winner.

With both schools even on penalties, the championship rested on Evander’s shoulders – he did not disappoint, slotting the ball into the back of the net and crowning Year 10 B&NES Schools Champions for the second time in 4 years.

Mr Naunton said “I am so proud of this side and the level of focus and determination they have shown when representing their school and beating every team they have faced. Well done!”

A nail-biting match provided an exhilarating end to the competition – Writhlington v St Gregory’s 1-1 (4-3 on penalties)
